Test your heating system
While our winters tend to be pretty mild down here in NC, we do see some freezing temperatures. The last thing you want is to be faced with a failing heating system. Consider contacting your HVAC provider for a checkup.
Check on your fireplace & chimney
If you have a fireplace, it’s important that you have the chimney properly cleaned by a professional chimney sweep. You’ll also want to check for any debris and cracks in the chimney. Any debris build up or nests could be a significant fire hazard.
Change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
It’s no secret that this time of year sees the most structure fires. And most of those are due to improperly functioning smoke detectors. So make sure they’re all working properly in your home. An easy way to do that is to simply replace the batteries so you can be assured they’re all in working order.
Prevent your pipes from freezing
It’s pretty basic science: when water freezes it expands. And that happens inside your pipes, it can cause them to burst. We’d recommend insulating pipes that are near windows and doors and in any areas that might not be heated. We’d also recommend disconnecting your garden hose. Oh, and don’t let your thermostat creep below 55.
Protect your entryways
Snow, ice and mud can all be a pain, but they can also damage your floors. Salt is also another floor damage culprit. This solution is easy: put heavy duty mats outside and inside your entryway doors.
Inspect your roof
Take a look at your roof. How are the shingles looking? Are any missing? Do you see any risks for potential leaks from melting snow? It’s not a bad idea to pay attention to the nearby trees. Do any look particularly threatening? Winter weather means heavy snow and ice which could cause trees or limbs to fall. Clear any that could potentially cause damage to your roof or home.
