So, you’re stuck. You took on a DIY home project and it didn’t go quite to plan. And you’re a little more than unsure of where to go from here. We get it. You are certainly not alone. Many have joined you in this exact place before. So let’s look at some of your options, shall we?

What to do when a DIY home project goes wrong

Take a step away

Step number one, as crazy as it might sound, is to stop. This likely sounds like the very last thing you’ll want to do. We get it. Inaction probably sounds like torture in this moment. But trust us, nothing good will come from frantically and blindly pushing forward. You’re deep in this, which very well could mean you’re just too close to the issue at the moment to see it for what it really is. So step one: stop. Take a step away. Go for a walk. Go play some golf. Take the afternoon off from the project all together and get as far away from it as you can. A clear (and calm) mind is essential for step two.

Reassess

Once you’ve calmed down a bit and have a clearer mind, it’s time to reassess. Look at the project with fresh eyes. Are you able to see it from a different angle? A new perspective? Do you see something you didn’t before? Sometimes just taking a few moments to reassess after stepping away can spark a whole new approach.

Visit a locally owned hardware store

Step two may or may not have been fruitful for you. But whether it was or it wasn’t, it’s time for a trip to a locally owned hardware store. Why locally owned? These stores are usually staffed with very experienced and knowledgeable individuals. And they’ve seen a lot. Ask to speak to someone and explain your situation. There’s some honest truth to the saying two heads are better than one. And picking the brain of someone in the industry and seeking their advice will likely be truly enlightening. Now, this probably goes without saying, but it’s advised that you then purchase your supplies from that same shop if possible.

Call in the pros

DIY home projects that go wrong can get very expensive very quickly. So it’s important to know when it’s time to throw in the towel and call in the pros. The last thing you want to do is get so deep into disaster that the project ends up costing you big.
