Getting ready to embark on a home remodel? Are you prepared? A home remodel typically involves tearing out walls, windows, cabinets, and other pieces of your home that once seemed to be permanent. So, here are some tips to help you survive the process!
Remodeling Your Home
Plan for your everyday life
Though a home remodel typically leaves parts of your house (temporarily) in shambles, you still want to plan for your everyday necessities. Those might include hot meals, cozy beds, refreshing showers, and clean clothes. If possible, you may want (or need) to seek alternative shelter during the project. You can seek refuge from the confusion by staying at a local hotel, hanging with a friend or relative, or even trying out that whole “glamping” thing in a recreational vehicle. We’d recommend that you stay close by though so you can keep tabs on the project.
If you can (or must) live at home during the project, you’ll want to plan ahead. Rearrange rooms to accommodate the chaos.
Manage the mess
Here’s the deal, a home remodel project is going to be messy. There’s really no way to avoid it. But! You can take steps to manage the mess. Before the project begins, work with your contractor to lay out some logistics. Those might involve hanging tarps to seal off rooms, laying out floor protectors, and stashing the rubble out of your neighbor’s view.
Protect your property
Inevitably, some dust will drift outside of the work area. For that reason, you should take precautions to protect your property. Cover up or remove your electronics, fine furniture, and other valuables.
Communicate with your contractors
Communication is key! You always want to keep the lines of communication open during a home remodel. Be sure to stick to the plan as much as possible. Midcourse project changes can often lead to delays and unexpected fees!
